90 Minute BIGOTS
[Zander from Falkirk on 6th December, 2007]

Every time there is an old firm game I watch people in the pub turn from Falkirk fans into 90 minute bigots. Both for Hoops and Gers I may add.Its utterly ludicrous. This is not only going on in Falkirk but in nearly every town on some level. These people shout sectarian slogans and taunt each other for the period of the game and after then amazingly revert back to themselves again what is the score with these people. Just home from the Falkirk Rangers game and if the TV audience could hear the sash and the cry was no surrender being chanted why is it that the security and/or the police could not. Answers on a postcard.

Please can you advise what words in the Sash you deem to be sectarian? Please can you explain the difference between Flower of Scotland and Derry’s Walls in terms of what is and what isn’t acceptable to you ? Whether the Sash or Derry's Walls are relevant songs for a football game, is an interesting debate, however neither can be classed as sectarian as anyone who knows the words to both songs would concur.
Zander from Falkirk
The words of these particular songs are intended to be inflammatory whether or not the actual words are present or not.I take it you know the words to which I refer. My point is that if Police and Security dont know this then the ther songs will creep back into the stadium before we know it. I have been a season ticket holder at ibrox for 23 years nd recently Rangers have done an amazing amount of work in trying to irradicate unacceptable behaviour in and around Ibrox as have Celtic in the east end. I would estimate that 99% of the people singing about derrys walls have never been in Ireland.

Zander,Just on the off chance you can't see Scots post,i will ask too. What is the difference between The Sash and the flower of Scotland?.
Colin from Falkirk
Flower of Scotland is a national folk song which celebrates a historical victory, like that found in most nations. The Sash is a song written by a member of the Orange Order for members of the Orange Order and their followers, an excluding private members club which operates a sectarian membership policy. The Boys of the Old Brigade is a national folk song which celebrates a historic victory against an external enemy, like that found in most nations.

Colin, I asked Zander to compare Flower of Scotland and Derry's walls, this neither of you have done, instead you have decided to compare FoS to two other songs. I also did not ask for your OPINION of the Orange Order, I asked what words in The Sash were sectarian - like Zander you have sidestepped the question, instead you appear to be suggesting that songs in praise of historic victories are acceptable at a football match. I assume therefore that a song about the Siege of Derry and the Battles of Aughrim, Newtownbutler (Eniskillen) and the Boyne, would be acceptable to you ?

Zander Afraid your logic about words intending to be inflamatory despite not actually being in the lyrics is a new one to me. To be honest, I don't know to what you infer, although as you state you've been a season ticket holder at Ibrox (Capital I) for 23yrs, maybe its some old lyrics I am not aware of. Maybe they're part of this song "The cry was no surrender" you dislike but which I've never heard ? Also, again unlike your self, I can't comment on the attitude of Falkirk fans during Old firm games in Pubs, as like most Rangers season ticket holders I would be at the match.

Scot - don't waste your time. People like Zander are so desperate for songs like the Sash to be sectarian, they blind themselves to sensible argument and adopt the Ostrich pose. The reason he won't answer your question is because his heads buried so deep in the sand.
