IRA Chanting Not Sectarian?
[Alex from Glasgow on 10th January, 2008]

Tynecastle 1.12.07. Celtic support indulging in IRA chanting. SPL observer states 'No problem'. Now, someone is not taking this anti-bigotry campaign seriously. If this were not so awful it would be funny. People can fudge the issue all they want, the IRA are a proscribed organisation who are undeniably linked with sectarian violence. To see articles such as the one posted on here make a mockery of this whole initiative. If we are serious about this, and we should be, blatant examples of sectarianism, such as this, need to be tackled head on. I see no evidence that anyone is pressing the SPL on this one and no evidence that the SPL is prepared to act. The SPL says no problem. That's alright then, isn't it? As I say, someone is not taking this seriously. Someone is not being honest and straight forward in their expressed anti-sectarian stand. Who shall we point the finger at?

Why would the SPL take it seriously? The SPL is a purely commercial organisation so what commercial organisation in existence would challenge its two biggest members who so clearly profit from the continuation of sectarianism?
Michael from Glasgow
Rangers did receive a warning for sectarian chanting at Inverness earlier in the season. It makes a mockery of things when Celtic are then let off, at the same ground with the same SPL observer, one Andy Ritchie (surely not the former Celtic player of that name?).

Sadly, this is the way things are. I think we need to take a long hard look at what we think acceptable is - Rangers fans have taken the warning about using the F word in songs, and I would say that Rangers have their house in order wrt sectarian singing. However, chanting IRA slogans, I would suggest is actually much, much worse. Its singing in support of a banned terrorist organisation, that has killed and maimed thousands of UK citizens and service personnel. For some strange reason, the Police, SFA, Politicians and this web site! seem to view chanting about the IRA as "acceptable". Why ?

Rangers have got a long way to go until they 'have their house in order' re: sectarian singing. It is NOT A COMPETITION to say which sectarian chants are or are not the most offensive - ALL these songs are sectarian, have nothing to do with football, and will die out in time. In my view, this is the biggest stumbling block of all - Rangers fans pointing the finger at Celtic and Celtic fans pointing the finger at Rangers, perpetuating the bigotry problem through actions and words, ad infinitum (Please excuse my use of latin if you find it offensive).

they were doing it again on boxing day at tanadice.they never seem to do it at home games only away games.this problem will never go away until its self policed by the fans.the only way to do it is to deducted them points every time thyey do it.im sure if the real fans hear this going on and they know they will be docked points they wil quick enough to stamp it on the head.another thing that annoys me is they are singing hatred towards proddys,came you imagine the uproar there would be if it was aimed towards the muslims.same goes for rangers against the catholics.;
